Wayne Gretzky Estates

In the spring of 2017, passionate wine enthusiasts, whisky aficionados and hockey fans gathered to celebrate the opening of the all-new Wayne Gretzky Estates in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country. The 23,000-square foot facility nestled amongst the grapevines is the first combined winery and distillery in Ontario and another shining example of the great things that happen when The Great One is leading the team.

Wayne Gretzky Estates invites guests to join in a celebration of Canadian wine, whisky, beer and Canadian culture. Whether enjoying a beverage at home, or visiting the Estate, our products and experiences offer a collection of quiet reminders that our country is at its best when we put in the extra work to produce results that truly stand apart.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

Winemaker, Craig McDonald

A good coach knows how to stack a team, and Craig McDonald’s unfaltering commitment to excellence rivals that of the man for whom he now crafts wine.

As the founding winemaker and creator of Wayne Gretzky Wines, Craig has played a pivotal role in creating the family of wines that Canadians have come to love. His attention to detail from vineyard to cellar has earned him Ontario Winemaker of the Year awards in both 2008 and 2016.

Whether he’s in the vineyards to check if the grapes are ready for harvest, or tweaking blends in the cellar, creating wines that Wayne Gretzky will be proud to call his own is always top of mind for Craig.

Master Distiller and Brewer, Joshua Beach

Joshua Beach is an Ontario boy who discovered after a spirited tour of the world that you can go home again.

Following university, Joshua decided to pursue his passion and moved to Scotland to complete his MSc in Brewing and Distilling at the renowned international university, Heriot-Watt. Upon graduation, Joshua gained hands-on experience through a variety of brewing and distilling positions in Europe (Scotland, Germany and England).

Eventually, Joshua felt a pull to take the lessons he’d learned in Europe and practice his craft in his home country. He returned to Canada and opened a distillery in Vancouver. When presented with an offer to be the first Master Distiller for one of Canada’s most beloved sports legends, Joshua knew without a doubt that it was time to return to his home province of Ontario to take advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

After 4 years of being our Master Distiller, it was a natural extension for Joshua to become the Master Brewer for Wayne Gretzky Craft Brewing. Joshua has lead the innovative approach to our first of many brews.

Having the Wayne Gretzky winery, distillery & brewery under the same roof allows Joshua to work closely with Senior Winemaker, Craig McDonald to execute a unique portfolio of products. From beer brewed from the same grains as whisky, to whisky finished in Icewine and Cabernet Sauvignon barrels to Estate-exclusive artisanal craft wine spirits, Josh and Craig prove that blending the worlds of wine, whisky and beer can have some truly delicious results.

Estate Mixologist, Zac Kvas

When you saddle up to The Whisky Bar at Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery & Distillery, be prepared for the cocktail that Zac Kvas and his team creates for you to taste unlike anything you’ve ever sipped before.

Before joining the Wayne Gretzky Estates team, Zac was a mixologist at one of Canada’s most buzzed about farm-to-table restaurants. He also spent time working in the vineyards and barrel cellar of a Niagara-on-the-Lake winery. Those experiences created a respect and passion for local Niagara ingredients that elevates his wine and whisky cocktails to a whole new level. A swirl of maple syrup, a splash of fresh-pressed apple juice, a fat wedge of a just-picked peach — in Zac’s cocktail playbook, anything that’s local and delicious is fair game.
