Global recognition meets local craft as more than 35 Ontario VQA wineries shine on the world stage
June 25, 2025— Niagara, ON — Ontario VQA wineries are making waves across the wine world once again. At the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), held in London, England, 193 medals were awarded to over 35 Ontario VQA wineries – a powerful endorsement of the talent, character and craftsmanship that define Ontario’s cool climate VQA wines.

Spanning all three appellations and a wide range of styles, from Chardonnay and Riesling to Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gamay, Baco Noir and Pinot Gris/Grigio, this year’s results reflect the depth and diversity of Ontario VQA wine. Each medal is a testament to the winemakers who bring precision, place and purpose to every bottle. Ontario’s VQA wines are more than a reflection of climate and terroir, they’re a reflection of the people who shape them. And on the world stage, their stories continue to resonate.
“These awards aren’t just a win for Ontario, they’re a tribute to the hands, minds and hearts behind the wine,” said Dean Foerter, Executive Director at Wines of Ontario. “Our VQA winemakers continue to prove that local craft can compete, and win, at the highest levels of international acclaim.”
Now in its 21st year, the DWWA is the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, judged by 248 leading experts from across the globe. Using a rigorous 100-point system, wines are evaluated in blind tastings by grape, style, region, and price point — making the competition one of the most trusted guides for both industry and consumers worldwide.
Canada’s wine community also made an impression on the world stage, earning 347 total medals and placing ninth overall in total medals awarded. Ontario’s VQA wines played a leading role in that success, further cementing their place among the world’s most celebrated cool climate offerings.
