Kacaba Vineyards
In 1997, Michael Kacaba launched into the wine industry, preserving a piece of prime vineyard benchland from a developer’s bulldozer. Today, he is turning out multiple-award-winners at this environmentally sustainable winery. Winemaker John Tummon oversees a range of whites and reds, with ripe, elegant, full-bodied, vintage-based reds attracting a loyal following. The 2007 Syrah, from one of the oldest plantings in Canada, was the first Ontario red wine to be named Red Wine of the Year at the Canadian Wine Awards. The 2007 Cabernet Franc had a strong showing at Cuvée 2011. The intimate, neo-Victorian winery is set at the end of a curved driveway lined with Canadian sugar maple, and a silver bridge crosses a ravine, all offering a fine sense of the Niagara Escarpment Bench terroir, as well as a view of the Toronto skyline across Lake Ontario.
